Carolina Wåhlstedt, Frank's mother, arrived in America in 1869 at age 17 and worked as a household servant. After an earlier marriage, David Klentrup married Carolina in Minneapolis in 1871. The couple had three children: Maria, Amanda (who died as an infant), and Frank.
In 1875 the family moved to Scott County (southwest of Minneapolis), where David had originally lived when he came to Minnesota. Frank grew up in the towns of Sand Creek and Jordan. In the late 1880, Carolina and David were divorced and Carolina and the children moved back to Minneapolis. David died in Scott County in 1889. The same year Carolina remarried to John Alseen, also a Swedish immigrant, and two half-siblings, Myrtle and Clara, were born.
As an adult, Frank became involved in technical work related to grain trading, beginning his career working as a millwright. Later he became a weighing specialist and then a scale inspector working for the State of Minnesota at the Minneapolis Grain Exchange. He continued to live in Minneapolis for the rest of his life, residing with his sister Maria for much of that time. Frank Klentrup, his sister Maria, and Maria's husband Frank Schimming are buried together in a row.
