USMCSgt. John Charlton Holladay, USMC was killed in action during World War II by a Japanese sniper on July 20, 1943 at Bairoko Harbor on New Georgia Island in the Soloman Islands. After more than 72 years, his remains were found on February 24, 2015, were properly identified on July 30, 2015 through modern DNA technology and are being returned home for burial. Sgt. Holladay was born on April 4, 1912 in Paxville, SC to John Henry Holladay and Elizabeth Corbett Holladay. He attended public schools in Florence and graduated from Florence High School in 1930. At the time of his death, he was survived by his parents and two brothers, James H. Holladay and Daniel Holladay Sr both of which now are now deceased.

Graduate of Florence High School in 1930, employed by Dorothy Green Florist of Florence for several years before answering the call of service after Pearl Harbor.
