During the Civil War, Alphonzo served with Company B, First Vermont Cavalry from November 19, 1861 to November 18, 1865. In October, 1863, Alphonzo was one of ten men captured at Brandy Station (near Culpepper, Virginia). They were taken first to Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia. Alphonzo was moved to several other locations before being sent to Andersonville Prison in Georgia. On August 5th 1864, he was one of a group of prisoners who escaped from the prison. They made their way back to Union forces near Atlanta. A detailed account of the experience was published in the New York Herald on September 18, 1864.
Alphonzo and Maria were living in Burlington by about 1870. Alphonzo owned a grocery store there.
Alphonzo was a member of Stannard Post, Grand Army of the Republic. He served as Assessor for the city of Burlington.
An obituary was published in The Burlington Daily News (Burlington, Vermont) on March 22, 1927.
