In October, 1863, Alphonzo was one of ten men captured at Brandy Station (near Culpepper, Virginia). They were taken first to Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia. Alphonzo was moved to several other locations before being sent to Andersonville Prison in Georgia. On August 5th 1864, he was one of a group of prisoners who escaped from the prison. They made their way back to Union forces near Atlanta. A detailed account of the experience was published in the New York Herald on September 18, 1864.
