Alphonzo was moved to several other locations before being sent to Andersonville Prison in Georgia. On August 5th 1864, he was one of a group of prisoners who escaped from the prison. They made their way back to Union forces near Atlanta. A detailed account of the experience was published in the New York Herald on September 18, 1864.
