MISS ELLEN ELMORE DIED YESTERDAY

A Woman of Rare Attainments Passes at a Ripe Age-Distinguished Parentage

Miss ellen Elmore, daughter of the late Franklin Harper Elmore and one of the most exemplary characters of her generation, died at her home on Lady Street yesterday afternoon at 5 o'clock. She was 85 years of age lacking a few days. Death came after an illness of two months, during which time her mind remained clear and unimpaired.

Franklin Harper Elmore, her father, was justly reckoned one of the most brilliant and accomplished men of his time. From 1840 to 1850 he was president of the Bank of the State of South Carolina and was reputd to be a man of great vision and business acumen. In 1850 he was summoned to take the senatorial chair of the deceased Calhoun and was renown as a national lawmaker. His late daughter possessed many of his sterling traits of character. Her mother's maiden name was Harriet Chestnut Taylor.

She was the founder of Miss Elmore's School for Girls, which did such excellent work 25 y or 30 years ago. When the College for Women was formed under the guidance of Dr Atkinson, she became one of his valued collaborators. Miss Elmore's influence and example were prominent factors in molding the characters of many young women who are glad to pay her tribute, and who will learn with regret of her passing at a ripe old age. Of her it may be truthfully said that she was the custodian of the noblest traditions of her age.

She is survived by three sisters, Mrs Sallie Elmore Taylor and Mrs Cornelia Elmore Davidson, both of Columbia, and Mrs Minnie Elmore Taylor of Florence. She was related to the Taylor family of Columbia, the Hane family of Fort Motte and the Chestnuts of Kershaw. She leaves many nephews and nieces.

Services will be at the First Presbyterian Church yard where the body of her father and other members of the family rest.

The pallbearers are: S B McMaster, N B Heyward, Alex R Taylor, Archibald Ray and Prof Yates Snowden.
