GROVETON - Robert Mayhew, 89, of Groveton and Clearwater, Fla., died Aug. 6, 2010, after a brief illness.

He was born Nov. 15, 1920, to Lewis and Ollie (Montgomery) Mayhew.

He graduated from Groveton High School in 1938. He joined the Maritime Service in 1943. He retired from the Maritime Service for the first time in 1967 and returned to Groveton with his young family. He was town manager from 1974 to 1977, and served in the Legislature from 1974 to 1975 and again from 1980 to 1981. He also operated the Mill Brook Inn Campground and later the Mill Brook Inn in Stark. In 1977 he returned to the Maritime Service and, at 80, he retired for a second time. Over the course of his maritime career, he visited nearly every port in the world.

Family includes his wife of 49 years, Josephine; sons Roger Mayhew of Lancaster and Neil Mayhew of Clearwater, Fla.; daughters, Donna Eason of Dover, Elizabeth Mayhew of Arlington, Va., and Susan Mayhew of Northampton, Mass.; nine grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

SERVICES: A memorial will be held in August 2011 at South Pond.

Memorial donations may be made to the Stark Improvement Fund (for the Stark Library), c/o Madeline Croteau, Stark 03582 or to the Loon Preservation Committee, P.O. Box 604, Moultonborough 03254.
