WALTER SMALL, VET PRESSMAN FOR TIMES, DIES
Walter A. Small, 69, Times Apts., Carlisle St., pressman for the Gettysburg Times for 40 years, died this morning at 7:25 o'clock in the Warner Hospital where he had been admitted as a patient two and a half weeks ago.
Death was due to a complication of diseases. He had been in failing health for several months.
Born in Adams County near McSherrystown, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Small. He lived for a time at Bittinger's near the present Bethlehem Quarries, north of Hanover, where he ran the former Valley View Hotel. Before that he had been a printer in Waynesboro and Hanover.
Lived here for 41 years.
A resident of Gettysburg for the last 41 years, he became a regular employee of the Gettysburg Times in 1916 and since that time until his retirement had served as pressman. He operated for 36 years the old flatbed press that turned out the daily edition of the Times until the fall of 1952 when the present Duplex tubular press went into use with one of Mr. Small's sons, Thomas, as the pressman.
From 1952 until his retirement last year, "Walt" assisted in the sterotyping department and helped with the press work.
He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and of the

local lodges of the Moose and the Eagles.
11 children survive
His wife, the former Ada Grace Leese, died in 1932.
These children survive: Mrs. Philip McCarney, Hanover; Robert, Baltimore; Mrs. Joseph LaToore, Pittston, Pa; William H., Gettysburg, Pa; Philip W., Seaman Air Force Base in Oklahoma; Norman F., Maywood, CA; Mrs. Cleason Fair, Gettysburg, R 4; Thomas G., Gettysburg; Chester, Gettysburg and Mrs. Allen McDonnell, Gettysburg, R. 4. There are 21 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren and these brothers and sisters, Mrs. Dennis Little, Gettysburg, R. 5; Harry, Hanover, and Norman, Baltimore.
Funeral arrangements are being made by the Bender Funeral Home.
There were 17 children altogether, not listed here are:Richard Eugene 1910-1954, Lena Marie 1913-1914, Joan Virginia Small 1931-1931, Stillborn 3 May 1932-3 May 1932
