John Agy, in the 78th year of his age, died at his residence, 1012 Cabinet Street, Northside, yesterday morning. He was one of best-known citizens of old Allegheny. Mr. Agy was born in Westmoreland County and removed with his parents to Allegheny, where he had lived for a period of almost 70 years. Mr. Agy was a steamboat engineer and was well known to the other rivermen and coal
operators for whom he worked. The greater part of his active life was spent running on boats from Pittsburgh to New Orleans. For many years he was chief engineer and had the highest confidence placed in him by his employers.
During the Civil War Mr. Agy was employed as an engineer on a Government steamboat in and about Memphis and used to recall the fact that he had been shot at during the night, when oiling the wheel shaft. He said he soon learned to oil it without a light.
Mr. Agy is survived by his widow, Mrs. Susan Morford Agy. and the following children: Mrs. Frank McComb, of the East End; J. C. Agy, of Chrome N.J.; Mrs. Annie Gibson and Miss Ella Agy, at home. The remains will be interred privately at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon in the Uniondale cemetery.
