H. C. Nelson was elected Chairman, Villiage of Hayward, MN on 27 Mar 1882.

Hans Christian Nelson or H.C., as he was known to everyone, was born June 14, 1848 in Nordre Land, Oppland, Norway. He came to the United States with his parents and two brothers in 1857 to Lafayette County, Wisconsin. In 1861, the family came to Hayward Township, Freeborn County, Minnesota.

H.C. farmed the home farm while his dad, Christopher, was in the Civil War. From 1868 on, he worked on the railroad and ran threshing machines in the fall. In 1870, he purchased 160 acres of land. This was located in two separte sections. He owned the S.W. 1/4 of the S.W. 1/4 of Section 22 and also the N.W. 1/4 of Section 27 of Hayward Township.

In 1870, he married Karen (Caroline) Larson, who was born in Norway on December 28, 1846. She was the daughter of Ole and Mathea Larson. Ole was born June 25, 1816 in Ness, Norway and Mathea was born March 3, 1822, near Christiania -(Oslo), Norway. The Larsons came to the United States in 1854. Ole first worked as a miller in Chicago, then went to Coon Prairie, Wisconsin. From there they came to Freeborn County.

H.C. had six children with his marriage to Karen. They were Clinton Oliver, Minnie Augusta, Charles Theodore, Clara Henrietta, Emma J., and William Milton. Karen died on October 5, 1881.

H.C. then married Thea M. Larson, a sister of Karen's, in March of 1882. Thea was born April 15, 1864 in Wisconsin. They had ten children. They were Fredrick A., Dora V., Laura O., Edgar L., Ida E., Ruth, Samuel Leroy, Esther R., Mary Naomi and Nora Constance.

H.C. was on the Hayward Township Board, school board, and was Senator in the State of Minnesota from 1891 to 1893. He was president of the Farmers State Bank of Hayward and President of the Farmers Mutual Insurance Company of Manchester. He was a charter board member and first president of the Hayward Farmers Elevator. He owned and operated 600 acres of land in Hayward Township in the early 1900's.

H.C. lived on the farm in Section 22 until his sons took over, he then moved to his farm in Section 21. When his youngest son Sam was married, he moved to the village of Hayward to the big square house north of the railroad tracks. He died April 17, 1931.

Thea remained in Hayward until her death on June 2, 1940. They are both buried in the Hayward Lutheran Cemetery.
