James Douglas Kesner

Born: Tue., Aug. 14, 1934
Died: Fri., Mar. 11, 2016

SHORT GAP, WV - James Douglas Kesner, 81, passed away at his home on Knobley Road in Short Gap, on March 11, 2016. He was supported and surrounded constantly by his wife (and girlfriend) of 66 years, Wilda (Wyer) Kesner, son, Paul Douglas “Doug” Kesner, and granddaughter, Whitney Kesner.

Jim was born on August 14, 1934, in Brushy Run, Pendleton County, WV to the late Willis and Mary (McGuiness) Kesner. His brother Willis “Lee” Kesner also predeceases him. He was preceded by the recent deaths of his sister-in-law Shirley Kesner and brother-in-law Carl “John” Wyer.

Jim was a life-long member of the Piedmont Church of God, where he served as the Adult Sunday School Class co-teacher, as well as serving on the Pastor’s Council and Board of Trustees.

He served in the US Army Medical Corp from 1957-1959.
He worked for 38 years at Westvaco while also running a working farm.
After retirement, he was able to devote full time to enjoying the farm, spending his days with his family and taking on the myriad of projects he either fell into or for some other reason became enmeshed.
He was a jack-of-all-trades and master of most. And for those projects he didn’t conquer straightforwardly, he found a way to at least fix it so no one else could. His loving manner, sense of humor, spirit of adventure, and spiritual presence, were all contagious and freely shared.

He is also survived by his stepmother, Grace (Welch) Leatherman Kesner, and a number of step siblings. In addition, he is also survived by a brother-in-law Don Wyer, Sr. (Martha) and his legacy of love, hard work, and sensitivity is entrusted to his nieces, nephews, and friends. He also leaves four (or so) cats he and Wilda adopted.

While this past year has involved discomfort, caregivers so professional and caring surrounded him. Jim and his family found solace, comfort, peace, and strength in each of you.

Friends will be received at the Markwood Funeral Home, Keyser, on Monday, March 14, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at 1 p.m. with Pastor Ada Kittle and the Reverend David Sutton officiating.
Interment will follow in Wyer Family Cemetery, Keyser, WV.
