Benjamin “Ben” Harrison Nelson, 77, of Smith Point passed away Saturday, March 26, 2016 in Houston, TX surrounded by his loved ones.

Ben was born December 6, 1938 in Smith Point to Cornelius and Jewel Nelson. He graduated from Anahuac High School then joined the Navy and served for 4 years. While enlisted he met the love of his life Betty “Jeri” Smith and immediately after discharge they married on January 19, 1962 and returned to Smith Point where he lived his life in its entirety. They had two sons and one daughter. They started Jeri’s Seafood in 1970. Ben was known for being direct. He would not accept “no” as an answer or “it can’t be done”. He never hesitated and forward was the only direction he knew. Many people admired and respected him for these traits, others not so much. He always said, “Friends come and go, enemies accumulate”.

Together Ben and Jeri built an empire and he left a legacy that lives on. Passing his knowledge of oysters, his respect for Galveston Bay, and advocating for the protection and conservation of the Texas oyster resource onto his descendants and employees was one of his greatest accomplishments.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Jeri, his mother Jewel and his dog Sheila; his son Walter “Runt” Nelson, his wife Kathy. Daughter, Terri Woody, her husband Tracy. Grandchildren Amber Ayres, Britney Underwood, Justin Woody, Angela Waits, Bethany Woody. Great Grandkids, Jayden and Jake Ayres, Rouxel Waits, Braxten Woody, Blane and Braylin Underwood. His siblings, Necil Kelley and Edward Nelson. He is also survived by numerous family, friends and employees.

He was preceded in death by his father, Cornelius Nelson, his son, Ben Nelson and his brother Cornelius “Joe” Nelson.

Friends are invited to visit with the family from 5pm until 8pm on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at Sterling Funeral Home, 1201 S. Main Street, Anahuac, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 10am at First Baptist Church of Anahuac, 405 S. Magnolia Avenue, Anahuac, Texas.
