Spalding. --- Arthur W. Spalding was born Jan 24, 1877 in Jackson, Mich. and was laid to rest in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Battle Creek, Mich. on Dec 21, 1953. At 14 he served as a stenographer for Elder Kilgore who was superintendent of the Southern field (of Seventh-Day Adventists). Later he became private secretary to J. H. and W. K. Kellogg, and was secretary to President Sutherland during his college days at Battle Creek. He married Maud Wolcott June 13, 1899. He taught school in Battle Creek and in Graysville Academy, Tenn. He was head of the English Department of Emmanuel Missionary College from 1903 to 1906. Principal of Bethel Academy in Wisconsin from 1906 to 1908 and co-founder of the Fletcher Institute in North Carolina with Proffessor Sidney Brownsberger in 1910. He was also principal of the Elmshaven School in California in 1913; principal of the Hurlburt Rural Training School at Reeves, Ga., in 1916 and 1917: editor of the Watchman magazine from 1917 to 1922; and secretary of the Home Commission of the General Conference (of Seventh-Day Adventists) from 1922 to 1942. Since that time, he has worked for the General Conference doing editorial work for the Review and Herald and the denomination, and during his lifetime has been the author of 30 books.

Elder Spalding died of a heart attack, Dec. 15, 1953, while en route to visit his wife who was in the hospital. He is survived by his wife; two sons, Dr. Ronald D. Spalding, Gobles, Mich.; A. W. Spalding, Jr., Collegedale, Tenn.; two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth McFadden, Bloomingdale, Mich., and Mrs. Genevieve Singer, also of Collegedale, Tenn.; and 11 grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at the Battle Creek Tabernacle by Elder F. E. Hutches, president of the Michigan Conference (of Seventh-Day Adventists), assisted by Elder S.E. Wight and the pastor, Elder A. K. Phillips.
