Jackie Anne Land Nichols, age 89, formerly of Neosho, passed away Saturday, March 26, 2016 at Barone Care Center, Nevada, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Mildred Land of Neosho and her sisters, Marie (infant at birth) and Wilma Jean Land Rhodes. Mrs. Nichols was also predeceased by her husband, John Franklin Nichols of Neosho in 2008 and granddaughter, Laura Hewlett Pokorney of Arizona in 2012. She is survived by three daughters and their families, Nicki and Stan Hewlett of Scottsdale, Arizona, Christi and Ed Peterson of Nevada, Missouri and Joni and Bill Allison of Springfield, Missouri; six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Jackie Nichols was born March 12, 1927 to Andrew J. and Mildred Grace Land in Pierce City, Lawrence County, Missouri. She attended Hammer Grade School in rural Neosho and graduated from Neosho High School in the Class of 1944. She married U.S. Coast Guardsman, John Nichols, serving in the European theatre of World War II, in June of 1945. They lived in New York City for the remainder of Mr. Nichols’ military service, returning to southwest Missouri with the birth of their first child, Nicki. Most of her life, Mrs. Nichols was a homemaker with various community involvements, but had worked as a bank teller and later in life as a “Welcome Wagon” hostess in Monett, Missouri. Her husband, John spent his entire career with the Gas Service Company and retired as regional Vice President of Kansas Power and Light in Wichita, Kansas. They returned to Neosho upon retirement and Mrs. Nichols enjoyed her family, traveling, gardening and other home activities. She and husband, John, were life-long members of the First Christian Church in Neosho.
