William was the son of Jeremiah Bonner and Margaret McCollum Bonner, Jeremiah's first wife. He moved with his father and step-mother Elizabeth to Stoneboro, PA and opened a general store in the new town in 1866. The store was a 3 story brick building at the intersection of Lake and Walnut Streets. The building next door was the warehouse. He married Margaret Loretta Custer, and they had 1 daughter Minnie. His half-brother Alexander took over ownership of the store when he died in 1885.
