Our Father, Grandfather and Brother, Steve was born on 6/11/51 to Gene and Evelyn Saltzman in his forever hometown of Tulare, California. He attended Tulare schools, graduating from TUHS in 1969 and was very proud to be a 69er.
Steve loved sports in particular, Football, Softball and Bowling and was a die-hard San Francisco 49er and Giants fan. He was a fierce competitor at his 3rd base position for a number of softball teams; both slow pitch and fast pitch and could knock them out of the park on demand. We cannot help ourselves from smiling at his pleasure in riding his Harley with his friends. He was very involved in his daughter, Colette’s riding horses with the Visalia Rockette’s and his son Shawn’s little league baseball coach.
Our Steve was well known as a long time independent insurance agent, who served several years on the Tulare-Kings County Independent Agent’s Association, culminating as President. He truly enjoyed working with his hands, particularly doing Landscaping as many of his friends and family knew. But it was his involvement with the Kiwanis Club of Tulare and the Tulare County Housing Authority that he was proudest of. With Kiwanis he was instrumental in the reinstitution of the Key Club in our high schools and was proud of his 25 years of perfect attendance until his illness would no longer allow his involvement. With the Housing Authority he was very honored to replace his Father-in-law, John Sturgeon as a member of the Board of Directors, first seated in December of 2000, culminating as Chairman of the Board for the last 8 years of his life recently being re-nominated and seated for another 2 year term. This was the high point in Steve’s Community involvement. As with everything he chose to be involved in, he had to believe in it and always gave 110% whole heartedly.
Although they had known each other for most of their lives, often walking to TUHS together, Steve found the Love of his life in Sandy Sturgeon when he joined the John B. Sturgeon Insurance Agency. Their friendship grew into Love and they married in 2002. Although we lost Sandy way too soon, Steve never let the memory of her escape his thoughts. They are together now once again.
Our Steve is preceded in death by his grandparents, Harold & Myrtle Saltzman and John & Bessie Kays and also his parents, Evelyn & Gene Saltzman.
He is survived in life by his Son, Shawn and wife Shannon, Daughter, Colette, Grandchildren, Christine, Drew, Allie and AJ, Brother, Bob, Sister Debby & Bruce Beck and many nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly.
Steve had a great impact on the life of anyone that he met and he will be greatly missed
Graveside service will be Friday, April 1st at 10:30 am at the Tulare Cemetery on Kern Street
