A recent graduate of Marian High School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, Courtney was recruited to play tennis for Villanova University the following fall. "Johns was a tennis player on the school team and an excellent honors student", commented Sister Lenore, the principal of MHS.

Courtney was a scholar-athlete at her all-girls' school, a member of the National Honor Society and Senior Class First Vice President. She received the Presidential Academic Excellence Award, was a Michigan Competitive Scholar and an Otterbein Scholar. Courtney was ranked fifth in singles in Southeastern Michigan and 99th in singles/ 2nd in doubles in the Western Section of the USTA. She was Varsity Co-Captain, Most Valuable Player, and a Regional Champion in high school tennis.

"Courtney was love in action", stated Pastor Doug Trebilcock (then Pastor of the Clarkston United Methodist Church). " We hurt and are in sorrow for those promises unfulfilled." But he urged mourners to treasure memories of Courtney and not to blame God for her death.
"This is not God's will. God weeps", he said.

To honor her spunk and enthusiastic spirit, Courtney's oldest brother, writer and producer Geoff Johns based his superhero character "Stargirl" on his little sister.
