She was preceded in death by her husband Charles Peterson, and is survived by her daughter Jennifer (Aaron) Barnett, and brothers Neil and Peter Van Lierop.
Joanne was the middle child of her parents, Simon and Beatrice Van Lierop, and was raised on the Van Lierop Bulb Farm in the Puyallup valley.
She and her brothers worked on the family farm, and learned many valuable life lessons. Her parents hired many students from the local schools to help harvest the flowers and bulbs while Joanne was growing up. She and her brothers were expected to set a good example by working harder than the other student workers. Nevertheless, Joanne always had an enthusiasm for fun and enjoying life which she generously shared with others.
Joanne was born on September 16, 1939 in Tacoma, WA. She graduated from Puyallup High School, and went on to receive a bachelor's degree in education from Pacific Lutheran University, and a master's degree in guidance and counseling. She worked in the Franklin Pierce School District from 1961 to 1978 and at City University for several years in the 1990s.
Her husband, Charlie, was a professor at PLU for many years. In 1981 Charlie, Joanne, and their daughter Jennifer moved to Hawaii, and dedicated their lives to Christian ministry. They returned to Puyallup in 1991, and continued their Christian outreach in many ways.
Joanne enjoyed life's adventures fully, and often brought her loved ones along for the fun. She dedicated a great part of her time sharing Christ's love with others, loving those who felt unloved, and providing practical help when needed. A memorial service is scheduled for 11am April 30, 2016 at Puyallup First Baptist Church, 1219 15th St. NW, Puyallup, WA 98371, with a reception to follow at the church. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Joanne's life.
