Alfred Burton Cook was the 13th and last biological child of William Cook and Susannah Hill. He was born in 1831 in Cherokee County, Georgia in what would become Union County, Georgia when the county was formed in Dec 1832. In the 1834 Union County special census, the household of William Cook and Susannah Hill was the largest household in the county with 16 people (7 males and 9 females). He is listed as age 19 in the 1850 census. In some records, his name is listed as Albert or Bert or A. B.

Alfred married Martha Ann Mulkey in 1854 in Union County, and they had 10 children.

In 1875, Alfred's 12 older siblings sold their interest in their father's estate to Burton.
