Max Emerson Lowry, 74, of Madison, died Thursday, March 24, 2016, at his residence.

He was born July 27, 1941, in Crothersville, to Charles V. and Harriet “Sug” Potter Lowry. His early childhood was spent in Hanover, before his family moved to Rushville when he was 4. The family returned to Madison in 1950. He attended the Eggleston Grade School and was a member of St. John United Church of Christ. The family moved to Yuma, Ariz. in 1958. He returned to Madison six months later so that he could graduate with the class of 1959 at Madison High School, where he was a member of the National Honor Society. He began a career in banking in 1961 as a teller for the Madison Bank & Trust Company in Hanover and in 1962 he became the branch manager. He was united in marriage to Donna Moore in 1962. He continued his education at Hanover College, Indiana University Southeast and the University of Louisville. He attended classes while working and studied business, accounting and finance. He served as manager of the hilltop branch for Madison Bank & Trust Company in the 1960s and was later transferred to the main office downtown. He was promoted to the Commercial Loan Department, and in the mid 1970s he was promoted to vice president. In the 1980s he was promoted to senior vice president and was in charge of overseeing bank loans. He was united in marriage to Belva Joyce Klumpp Howard on Nov. 19, 1988. He retired in 1997 after 36 years with the bank, which was known as National City Bank at the time of his retirement. He served as a member of the Madison Rotary Club and the Madison Elks Club 524, the fundraising board of the Jefferson County United Way, fundraising with the American Heart Association, Jefferson County Industrial Development Board, Madison Chamber of Commerce, and the Madison-Jefferson County Community Foundation. He enjoyed playing golf, and watching baseball, basketball and football. He was a fan of the Madison Cubs, Indiana University basketball, Cincinnati Bengals, Indianapolis Colts and the Indiana Pacers. His also enjoyed poker, politics, business, economics, the stock market and reading.

He is survived by his wife, Belva Joyce Klumpp Lowry; two sons, Bard Emerson Lowry of Fishers and Derin Kennedy Lowry of Los Angeles, Calif.; two daughters, Laura White and Sheri Howard, both of Madison; two sisters, Toi Peddie of Stevensville, Mich. and Starr Wilson of Lexington, Ky.; nine grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by one step daughter, Lisa Howard Stivers, who died Sept. 30, 2014; his father, who died Oct. 7, 2003; his mother, who died Nov. 13, 2006; one nephew; two uncles; and two aunts.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre. Burial will be in Springdale Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the service.
