Vera D. Lincoln, 88, passed away on March 21 at Sedgewood Commons Nursing Home in Falmouth after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born in Newcastle April 11, 1927 to Charles W. Dodge Sr. and Martha Laine Dodge. She graduated from Lincoln Academy in 1944 as salutatorian and then worked for a short time as a teller at First National Bank.
In 1946 she married Albert B. Reed, Jr. and in 1947 had her only child, Stephen.
For several years she worked as a secretary for Dr. Mary Tracy, a pediatrician in Damariscotta, but for most of her working career she was an executive secretary for the state of Maine at the Office of Economic Opportunity (later Community Services Administration).
In 1969 she married J. Kenneth Lincoln and they lived in Richmond until his demise in 2006.
She was a woman of many talents but her greatest joy was her home and time spent with family, especially holidays. She would get so involved with Christmas that it would take several days to recover from the energy expended.
Vera left behind many fond memories as “Nanny,” a loving and doting grandmother to Christopher and Matthew. She had a large collection of teddy bears at her Richmond home that they would never miss an opportunity to tow. While there she showered them with love and attention.
The festive gatherings with delicious dinners were topped off by her “world’s best apple pie.” Her love and presence are a gift her son and grandsons will always cherish.
She was predeceased by her parents; brothers, Charles, Jr., Ormond, and Elliot; husbands, Albert Reed and J. Kenneth Lincoln; and nephew, David Dodge.
She is survived by son, Stephen Reed, MD and partner Ann of Wiscasset and North Fort Myers, Fla.; grandchildren, Christopher of Portland and Matthew of Cambridge, Mass.; sisters, Martha Kierstead and Katherine Rice; brothers, Richard and Larry Dodge; stepchildren, J. Kenneth Lincoln, Jr., Emelyn Kappler, and George Lincoln, III; nephews, Richard, Jr., Elliot, Jr., Vincent, and Brian; and nieces, Lynn, Julie, Nancy, Karen, Brenda, Kimberly, Ricky, Amy, and Gretta.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Sat., June 18 at Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta, followed by a reception. Interment will be at the Alna Cemetery.
