BETTY SIMMONS CARLISLE
Betty Jean Simmons was born on Monday, November 27, 1933 at home in Citra, Marion County, Florida to Kenneth Glover Simmons and Margaret Mae Wimberly Simmons. She gained her Angel Wings on Tuesday, February 2, 2021 after a brief illness.

She attended schools in Citra, Ocala and Hawthorne. While attending high school in Hawthorne, she had many friends and was a cheerleader and a member of the band.
In June, 1950, she married her high school sweetheart, Hoyt Lanier Ergle from Island Grove. They had two daughters, Karen and Wanda.

On August 15, 1956, she married LeRoy Carlisle of Pierson. They met in Salt Springs where her Mom and step-dad had a cabin. There was a dance hall there, commonly called “the Jook”. She loved to dance, especially the jitterbug. She would even put on some music and dance with her kids when they were little. What fun that was! In addition to LeRoy’s daughter Mary, they had two more daughters, Cindi and Patricia. Five girls in the house and one man! In 1968, she and LeRoy adopted a little boy, Billy. Finally, Daddy had a boy in the house. Let’s interject here that you’ve not known fear until you’ve been chased through the house by a mad redhead with a flip-flop in her hand. Or a hairbrush. Most of the time, we could outrun her! Sometimes not. We had it coming. Ouch!

While living with Nana and Dada Ergle (she always called them her other parents), Betty decided she needed to learn a trade. In 1955, she went to “Beauty School”, as it was called then, to become a beautician/hairdresser. She practiced that profession like the “Queen of Hair”. Every woman left her shop looking like they had received the royal treatment. Sometime, back in those early days of hairdressing, she decided to dye her light brown hair red. Not only did the color suit her complexion, but also her personality. There was no looking back and she remained a redhead for the rest of her days. She loved bright colors and dressed accordingly. She loved clothes and shoes and was always “dressed to the nines”, with her hair and make-up, nails and toes (always red) impeccably done.

After her Dad passed away in 1960, she took the small inheritance he left her and opened “Betty’s Beauty Shoppe” in Pierson. She worked tirelessly to keep the women in Pierson beautifully coiffed. Friendships too many to count were formed within those walls and the women raised their children together, gave advice when needed or not, and shared their joys and hurts. They were like one big family.

In 1977, she retired for about 3 years. She missed her profession and her ladies. She found out the Florida Lutheran Retirement Center in DeLand was looking for a hairdresser. They already had a small shop set up with the necessary equipment. After checking it out, she moved in and worked there another 17 years. She had a loving compassion for the elderly and fit right in. Once again, many friendships were made. Stepping down again was not easy.

After retirement, she started working at Pierson Elementary, in the Reading Program. Later, she moved to Deland High School with the special needs Reading Program. She dedicated 10 years to helping children learn to read better.

After the death of her husband, she continued to ship to his fern customers as well. The one left at the time of her passing had been a customer for over 60 years.
When the Charismatic movement began in the mid-70’s, she became very involved and dedicated to her church, First Baptist of Pierson. She taught 3rd & 4th grade Sunday School for so many years, we’ve lost count. She loved those kids so much and had stories to tell about each and every one. She probably served on every committee in the church at one time or another for all these years; still on a couple at the time of her passing. Her favorite event at church was the annual Homecoming, when former Pastors were honored along with the founding Charter Members of the church, special singing and a big church dinner.

From her five daughters and one son, she was Blessed with grandchildren: Michele, Melissa, Marlon, Stephen, Tanya, Michael, Sammy, Clayton, Shane, Anthony & Myles.

Great-grandchildren began to come along and she couldn’t have been more thrilled. They are: Mason, Maggie, Brantley, Brianna, Ava, Amya, Barrett, Bryce, Alex, Noah, Carson, Reagan, McKenzie, & Madisyn.

Preceding Betty in death were her husband LeRoy Carlisle, parents Kenneth Simmons and Margaret Wimberly Hosman, grandson Sammy White, sister Eileen Rain, brother David Simmons, Hoyt Ergle, and daughter Mary Carlisle Campbell.

Survivors include: Karen & Joe Strickland, Michele & Eric Johnsen, Brianna Johnsen & Barrett Johnsen, Melissa & Robb Muley, Mason Muley & Maggie Muley; Wanda & Carlton Hamm, Tanya & Tony Ramos, Ava Ramos, Amya Ramos & Alex Ramos & Clayton Reynolds; Cindi & Sam Tumminello, Michael & Christy Bratcher, Bryce Bratcher, Carson Bratcher & McKenzie Bratcher, Shane Tumminello & Noah Tumminello; Patricia & Francis Smelt, Stephen & Amanda White; Marlon & Melissa Bates, Brantley Bates, Reagan Luke & Madisyn Bates; Billy Carlisle, Anthony Carlisle & Myles Carlisle.

There are too many extended family and friends to list, but just know that she loved and cherished each and every one.

With the birth of Michele, she became “Nana” & served in that capacity for 50 years, not only to her own but to many, many kids that passed through her life, both at church and school. Some of them still call her Nana to this day.

She will be missed by many, but, the wonderful memories will always be there to cherish. What a marvelous plan God had for her life!
