Professional Soccer Player, Coach. Considered by many experts as one of the top players of all time, as an attacking midfielder and forward, he was one of the players responsible for the Netherlands rise to becoming a world soccer power in the 1970s using their concept of Total Football. He led the Dutch team to the World Cup final in 1974, where they lost to Germany 2-1, and he was selected as the Golden Ball (most valuable player) for that tournament. He played 48 times for his country, scoring 33 goals. He played his club soccer for Ajax Amsterdam in the Dutch first division, Barcelona in the Spanish first division, and the Los Angeles Aztecs and Washington Diplomats in the North American Soccer League, as well as short stints with Levante in Spain and Feyenoord in the Netherlands, for a total of 514 top level games with 290 goals. With Ajax he won 8 Dutch championships, 5 Dutch Cups and three European Champions Cups. He also won one Spanish Championship and one Copa del Rey with Barcelona, and a further Dutch championship and Dutch cup with Feyenoord. As a coach, he led Ajax to two Dutch Cups and a UEFA Cup, but had his greatest success as a coach with Barcelona, where he won four Spanish championships, one Copa del Rey, one European Champions Cup, one UEFA Super Cup, and one UEFA Cup Winners Cup as well as finishing as runner-up one in that competition and the European Champions League. As a player he was three time Dutch Player of the year, three time European Player of the Year (Ballon d'Or), twice Dutch Sportsman of the year, and NASL MVP. He was voted the European Player of the Century in 1999, the World Team of the 20th Century, and the World Soccer Greatest XI in 2013, among many other honors. As a coach, he was chosen as the European Manager of the year in 1987. He invented the "Cruyff Turn" which allows a player to make a quick 180 degree turn with the ball. He was presented the FIFA Order of Merit in 2010 for his contributions to the game. A heavy smoker before open heart surgery in 1991, he passed away from lung cancer
