Gladys E. Goodman, 92, passed away March 16, 2016, in Phoenix, Ariz.
She was a former resident of the Anderson community before relocating to Phoenix. Gladys was born Feb. 13, 1924, in Indianapolis, and was a graduate of Crispus Attucks High School. Gladys graduated from Butler University, College of Pharmacy in 1941 and also completed post-graduate work at Purdue University, West Lafayette.
She was one of the first three African-Americans to graduate from the Butler School of Pharmacy in 1941.
Gladys served her apprenticeship with Hook's Drug Store in Indianapolis and later established her own pharmacy, Smith's Pharmacy, located at 14th Street and Madison Avenue, Anderson. She later retired as a hospital pharmacist from The Department of Mental Health, State of Indiana.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, and husbands, Lee A. Miller and Archie L. Goodman.
Gladys was a former member of Allen Chapel AME Church, Indiana Pharmacy Alliance, National Pharmaceutical Association, Madison County Literacy Coalition, Golden Soror Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, past matron, Olive Chapter 26, Order of Eastern Star. She also received numerous other awards and honors.
Gladys is survived by her daughter, Cassandra Miller of Phoenix, Ariz.; goddaughter, Della Elliott; along with a host of other relatives and friends.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at L.C. May Funeral Services, Anderson, Ind., with visitation two hours prior to services. Interment will follow on Monday in Anderson Memorial Park.
