Ardai, Jose (Jay) L., Jr.

Jose (Jay) L. Ardai, Jr., 65, of Genoa, N.Y. died Sunday, March 13, 2016, from complications of cancer.

Jay was born in Washington, D.C. on July 6, 1950 and grew up in Falls Church, VA. He graduated from George Mason College of the University of Virginia in 1972 with a degree in physics. Jay worked as a research technician/engineer at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University for over 30 years. During this time he designed, built and operated oceanographic and geophysical research devices for ships and ice camps. He also provided professional support to the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Antarctic Program. His travels took him to the Antarctic, the Arctic, Asia, South America, Africa, Europe and most of the world's oceans. A memorial tribute from Columbia University is available online at http://tinyurl.com/gmakm2h. In 2001 Jay purchased the Fingerlakes Woolen Mill and farm in Genoa, NY. He operated the mill with his wife Suzanne until his death. Jay attended the Poplar Ridge Friends Meeting in Poplar Ridge, NY. He enjoyed auctions, eating in diners with friends, flying airplanes, and visiting with people.

Jay is preceded in death by his parents Jose' L. Ardai and Elaine Donley Ardai of Falls Church, Virginia.

He is survived by his wife Suzanne O'Hara, his sister Armin Ardai Cornwell (George), his nephew George Cornwell (Debra) and niece Stephanie Keppich (Todd). He is also survived by their children George Cornwell and Laura and Mila Keppich.

A memorial service will be held at the Poplar Ridge Friends Meetinghouse on April 23 at 11 am with a reception to follow at Dugan's Country Grill.
