James Edward Browning

Black Mountain

James Edward Browning, 85, a resident of Black Mountain for the past 42 years, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2015 at John Keever Jr. Solace Center after a brief illness.

He was born on May 28, 1929 in Chicago, Illinois to the late John T. and Edith B. Browning. He attended prep school in Springdale, NC, and afterward, majored in history at Carroll College in Milwaukee, Wisc. While immersed in his studies, he met and married the former Harriet May Disch of Milwaukee.

After serving four years in the U.S. Army, during which he was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany, he and Harriet resided in Oconomowoc, WI and Hinsdale, Ill., where he was a partner in several business enterprises.

In 1961 he moved his family to the Northport, MI area, where he owned and operated a cherry farm for a number of years. James was an avid reader and maintained his interest in history, especially of the Civil War era.

He loved dogs and provided shleter and a good life to many a mutt and pedigree alike throughout the years. He was a wonderful father and grandfather and will be missed by his family.

He is preceded in death buy the mother of his children, Harriet, his second wife, Ellen, and two sons, Jeffery Browning and John Browning, both of Florida. James is survived by his daughter, Jane (Ransom) Davis of Black Mountain, and two sons, James Jr. (Kathryn) Browning of Omena, Michigan and Jerold Browning of Largo, Florida, and grandchildren James, Landon, Aric, Lauren and Olivia.

The family extends its appreciation to the John Keever Jr. Hospice Center, who took such good care of their father James. Arrangements in the care of Harwood Home for Funerals and a Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the John Keever Jr. Solace Center.
