A native of Old Fort, he was a son of the late Fred Henry Collins and Leona Lucille Collins. He was an alumnus of Western Carolina University and proudly served in the U.S. Army. Most recently he was employed by Ethan Allen, however, he had previously worked for both Sara Lee and Collins and Aikman. He was an avid golfer, and a true fan of the UNC sports program.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, Randall Everett and sister, Gloria Jean Collins.
Surviving is his son, Gary Fred Collins Jr., of Spruce Pine; brother, Jack Collins and wife, Lynn, of Marion; grandson, Mason Collins of Pleasant Gardens; nephews, Ronnie and Joshua Collins; niece, Mary Barradas, and several great nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 3 PM on Friday, March 25, 2016 in the chapel at Penland Family Funeral Home in Swannanoa with the family receiving friends an hour prior. The burial will take place at 10 AM on Monday, March 28, 2016 at the Western Carolina State Veteran’s Cemetery in Black Mountain.
