Toronto Mayor. From 2010 until 2014, he served as the 64th Mayor of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Ford will be remembered for making international headlines, a result of controversy and scandal which marred much of his political career, which included the usage of crack cocaine and driving while intoxicated. In spite of opposition, he refused to resign from office. Born into wealth, his father was a millionaire businessman who later served as a Progressive Conservative member of the Ontario Provincial Legislature, Robert was initially interested in a football career, which led to his coaching at the high school level. He entered the political arena in 2000, when he was elected to Toronto's City Council as a representative from Ward 2. He immediately established himself as a proponent of conservative views and was elected Mayor of Toronto in a three-way election in 2010. During his tenure, he balanced the city's budget by cutting services and raising property taxes. Among one of his priorities was to extend subway rail systems into the suburbs. In April of 2014, Ford took a leave of absence when he entered drug treatment program and returned to office that summer. In September of 2014, he was diagnosed with abdominal cancer. After receiving treatment, the cancer returned and spread to his bladder which led to his death.
