"Watt" Nute was the fourth child of Charles William and Alice Bartram Nute. His parents came to Holt County, Missouri in 1869, locating in Whig Valley, west of the present town of Maitland. In 1884, the family moved to Maitland, where Walter was born on Feb. 20, 1885. His father was engaged in the furniture and undertaking business, later a hardware and implement store and then a feed store and coal yard.
Walter married Laura E. Dixon on March 11, 1907. The had two daughters who died in infancy, and two sons, Marion of Georgia, who has one daughter, Laura Alice, and Robert, who is married and lives in Iowa.
Walter's siblings were: Charles William, Grace M. (Bethel) Goodpasture, and Minnie Florence (Herman) Gilfillan.
