Ronald Mirl Whitaker, 71, of Las Vegas, Nevada died Saturday, March 19, 2016 at the Nathan Adelson Hospice in Las Vegas, following a long illness.

He was born Oct. 10, 1944 in Tremonton, Utah, the son of Mirl William Whitaker and Ada Belle Bruesch. He married Marina Garcia de la Rocha of Nogales on October 6, 1968 in Nogales, Arizona.

Ron attended school in Rupert, Idaho and graduated from Minidoka County High School on May 21, 1962. He left one week later for a four-year stint in the Navy; after the Navy, he spent one year at Utah State University where he excelled. In 1966 he joined the Border Patrol and spent four years in Nogales, Arizona where he met Marina. In 1970 he joined the U.S. Customs Service as a Special Agent and was transferred three years later into the newly created Drug Enforcement Administration; he spent five more years in Nogales with the DEA. From 1978 to 1985 he again served as a Special Agent, in Tucson and Washington, D.C. In 1988, he became the Director of the U.S. Customs Service Academy that was responsible for training federal law enforcement officers in the Western United States. When he retired from federal service in 1995, he served as a contractor and provided training services to various federal and state law enforcement agencies until he became ill in 2012, when he retired.

Ron led a remarkable life with many unusual experiences, some humorous, some dangerous, and all very interesting. He is one of a kind and all who know him will miss his cheerful smile and warm friendship. He suffered a series of debilitating illnesses over the last four years with grace, dignity and good humor. He is an example to us all.

He is survived by his wife, Marina Whitaker, Las Vegas, Nevada and his daughter, Mrs. Stacy Lee Haworth (Orin) of Las Vegas; two grandsons: Troy Haworth and Adam Haworth of Las Vegas, Nevada; two brothers: Morris D. Whitaker (Marguerite), St. George, Utah; Barry R. Whitaker, Wendover, Nevada; three sisters: Deanna Cole, Almo, Idaho; Claire Olson (Art), Portland, Oregon; Joyce Stroud (Roger), Harriman, Utah. His son, Steven, and one sister, Lola, preceded him in death.

The family extends special thanks to the staff of the Nathan Adelson Hospice for their loving care and genuine compassion for our beloved Ron.
