Tonia suffered from Friedrich's ataxia, a congenital nervous system disorder. She could not use her legs and had limited use of her arms. Tonia drowned when the wheelchair she was sitting in fell into the Mississinewa River by the Charles Mill Dam. Her death was ruled a probable suicide.

She was preceded in death by her father, Robert D. 'Bob' Bush.
