US Congressman. He graduated from Allegany Central School in 1943 and joined the US Navy for World War II. After his 1946 discharge he worked as a carpenter and a Procter & Gamble salesman before becoming active in several businesses, including Vice President of radio station WHDL in Olean, National Advertising Manager for the Times Herald newspaper in Olean, and a partner in the Hastings & Jewell real estate and insurance firm. A Republican, he was a member of the Allegany Town Board from 1953 to 1962, and was town police court justice for five years. He served in the New York Assembly from 1963 to 1965, and the New York Senate from 1966 to 1968. In 1968 he was elected to Congress, and he served from 1969 until resigning in 1976 to become President of Associated Industries of New York. In 1976 he was convicted of mail fraud and filing false payroll information because he accepted kickbacks from his Congressional employees, and he served 14 months in prison. After his release he lived in retirement, first in Belleair Beach, Florida, and then as a resident of Allegany, New York.
