On August 21, 1887, he was united in marriage to Margaret Curran. To this union five children were orn.
In 1908 they and their family moved to a farm near Dexter, Iowa. In 1919 they moved to Dexter where they have lived to the present time. He was baptized and received into the Presbyterian Church. They were married fifty-seven years and eleven months. Three children have preceded him in death. Gladys in infancy, Edith Payton in 1933 and Ernest in 1938. The two surviving sones, James and Lewis, both reside in Dexter.
He leaves to mourn, his wife Margaret, two sons James D. and Lewis E. and Mrs. Thelma Hill of Davenport, widow of Ernest Hill; nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren; three brothers, Joseph of Rake, Iowa, Liewis of Coal City, Illinois, Thomas of New Carlisle, Indiana, and one sister, Mrs. Martha Gilchrist of Coal City, Illinois, and a host of nieces and nephews in Iowa and Illinois.
