James Blake Gillen, 68, of Corsicana, died December 27, 1990 in Corsicana.

He was born September 20, 1922, in Blooming Grove. He graduated from Blooming Grove High School, going on to attend Texas A & M University.

He was associated in business with his father, Drew Gillen, and operated the Chevrolet agency in Hubbard for many years.

He organized a motor freight company in Corpus Christi and had a management consulting firm in Austin, but returned to Navarro County in 1970, where he had interests in ranching, real estate, insurance and banking.

He was a director of the Corsicana Chamber of Commerce and chairman of its governmental relations committee, served as director of the Salvation Army and the Navarro Consultation Center, and was a member of the Corsicana Masonic Lodge and on the board of Navarro Regional Hospital.

He was a founding director of City National Bank of Corsicana and served as the first chairman of its board of directors.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, served on the board of deacons and was director of the Senior Adult III Sunday School Department. He also served as chairman of the church's finance committee and finance chairman of the New Family Life Center Building.

He was active in politics and served in various capacities in the election campaigns of Governor John Connally and President Lyndon Johnson. He was director of housing for the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago, was appointed by three governors of both parties to the board of the Trinity River Authority, which he served for many years as president.

He served on the board of numerous civic and charitable foundations and was enthusiastic supporter of Baylor University, serving on the university's Development Board.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Underwood Gillen, a son, Jim Gillen, Tyler; two daughters Gay Gillen Stone, Austin, and Mary Gillen Burch, Tyler; two sisters, Wynell Gillen Patterson, Salado, and Maxine Gillen Brown, Corsicana; and seven grandchildren.

Memorial services are scheduled at First Baptist Church in Corsicana. Private burial will be under direction of Corley Funeral Home, Corsicana.
