She was born on September 30, 1930, in Lumberton, NC.
Velma was a graduate of Lumberton High School. She began her working career at Hood Buick. It was there she met the love of her life – a young tow truck driver named Bailey Davis.
She and Bailey were married, bought a home on Godwin Avenue, and built a life together. They had their children. Both the oldest were born with significant disabilities. Russell and Phil lived at home under Velma's constant care until they passed.
Velma ultimately returned to the workplace and retired from Robeson County Mental Health. Velma and Bailey enjoyed years of being retired together and continued to enjoy each other's company until Bailey passed as he and Velm approached their 60th anniversary.
She lived an active life at Methodist Manor in Florence, SC beginning in 2013. She developed many new friendships – filling her days with crafts, tea parties, ice cream socials, and rowdy Bingo games. She only rarely complained about having too much to do.
Velma's faith was strong and pervasive. She trusted her Lord and Savior and considered herself blessed with good health, good friends, and a happy, fulfilling life. She was also a member of Sherwood Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville, NC.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bailey Davis; her sons, Russell Carl Davis, and Phillip Keith Davis.
Velma is survived by her son, Don Davis of Williamsburg, VA.
The funeral services will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Shining Stars Preschool, Bryan Center, 100 Hargrave Street, Lumberton, NC 28358.
