Funeral services for Donald Ray Beaver of Verndale will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday at the Verndale United Methodist Church with Pastor Ken Uhren presiding. Friends may call at the Schuller Family Funeral Home's Verndale Chapel on Monday from 5:00 until 8:00 PM and again at the church on Tuesday from 9:30 AM until the time of services. Don passed away at the age of 88 on Friday, March 18, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family and under the gentle care of Lakewood Home Care and Hospice of Staples.
Don was born on November 7, 1927 in Wadena to Lucius and Jane (Bryce) Beaver. His childhood was spent helping on the family farm south of Verndale. He graduated from Verndale High School. He enlisted in the US Army on October 5, 1946, and served his country both stateside and for over a year in the Pacific Theater at Masan, Korea. He was honorably discharged on March 24, 1948 and returned to Minnesota and his work at Beaver Brothers Farm in Verndale. The GI Bill gave him the opportunity to attend the Hanson Auto Body School in Fargo.
Don was united in marriage with Bernice Elsie Salo on May 4, 1958 at New York Mills, MN. He worked his entire life as a farmer. He enjoyed reading in the winter, watching college basketball, and was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan.
Don was preceded in death by his parents Lou and Jane; his son Bruce in 1988; brothers Leonard, Everett, Pete, and Vernon; and sisters Lucille Anderson, Meave, and Ruth.
He is survived by his loving wife of over 57 years, Bernice; sons Gary of Verndale and Craig (Brenda) of Owatonna, MN; daughter Lori Mitchell of Forest Lake, MN; grandchildren Jacob and Kyle Mitchell; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Pallbearers are Jacob Mitchell, Kyle Mitchell, Shawn Anderson, Dan Bosell, Tim Wutzke and Joe Wutzke. Military Honors provided by the MNAG Honor Guard.
Burial is in the Greenlawn Cemetery of Verndale.
