Beverly Ann Johnson of Cambridge, MN formerly of Austin and Tamarack, MN passed away on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at Cambridge Medical Center at the age of 96.
Beverly was born Sept.14, 1919 in Braham, MN to Charles & Frances (Peterson) Mattson. She grew up on the family farm “The Flying Hoof” southwest of Braham. Beverly attended the Pine Cone District 41 country school and graduated from Braham High School in 1937. Early employment consisted of clerical & administrative duties within government offices of the FHA and USDA at several locations in Minnesota, including Stillwater and Rochester. She was an active member of the Rum River Saddle Club and enjoyed horseback riding for many years. In her early 20’s she and her sister Helen Mae rode their horses from Stillwater back home to The Flying Hoof on an overnight trail ride.
Beverly met Theodore Johnson, the love of her life while ice skating in Rochester. They were married on May 29, 1952 at Stanchfield Baptist Church. The couple lived in Austin, MN while Ted worked at Hormel until his retirement.
Following retirement Bev & Ted moved to their hunting & fishing shack, “The Golden Antler” in Tamarack. It was turned into a beautiful year-round cozy cabin in the woods, adorned by Ted’s wood craftsmanship & Bev’s arrangements from her nature walks. Beverly loved to pick up rocks, driftwood, wild flowers and plants as they struck her fancy. The car trunk always included a shovel and plastic bags to collect treasures found along her path. A trip to the wild blueberry patch or searching for the elusive lady slipper was commonplace. The Golden Antler was always a welcome respite for family and friends to enjoy a time to fish, hike, cross country ski, snow shoe, and snowmobile. They traveled extensively throughout the USA including Alaska on camp & fishing trips.
After Ted’s passing to glory in 1984, Bev remained at the lake cabin another four years. She moved to Cambridge in 1988 where she lived for the next 28 years. Numerous winters were spent in Florida, Texas, and Arizona as she enjoyed traveling in her motorhome and continued road trips across the USA well into her 80’s. She was an avid league bowler with the Wood Wigglers of Braham and the Blue Jays of Cambridge. Her 18# ball rolled down the alley for many a strike. She loved written correspondence with family & friends and often recycled greeting cards with a short typed note. Beverly had a strong faith in God throughout her life and particularly enjoyed small group Bible studies with friends. She was an active member of the Church of Christ in Tamarack and the First Baptist Church of Cambridge.
Beverly will be dearly missed by her family and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband Theodore Johnson, parents Charles & Frances Mattson, siblings Glenn Mattson, Charles “CJ” Mattson Jr., Gayle Ek, Marjorie Gerdin, and infant twins Myron & Myra Mattson. She is survived by her sister Helen Mae (Eugene) Pederson of Braham, MN. Many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
