Burial of a Gallant Soldier
The funeral of Captain Jasper M Whittey, whose death occurred suddenly Sunday afternoon, at his residence, No 1836 Boundary street, took place yesterday afternoon and was attended by a large circle of friends. Captain Whittey was one of the first to volunteer his services at the commencement of the war of the rebellion, enlisting in the Sixty-Ninth New York Volunteers, taking part in the battles of the first Bull Run and Antietam. At the battle of White Oak Swamp he was wounded severely and disabled for life. He was complimented in general orders and promoted on the field battle three times in one day for gallantry. The remains were interred in Mount Olivet, six of his old companions-in-arms acting as pall-bearers.
Jasper M Whitty, age 27 years Enrolled on Sept 5, 1861, at New York City, to serve three years. Mustered in as captan, Company C, on October 4, 1861. Wounded in action on Sept 17, 1862. Discharged on February 9. 1863. His name also borne as Whittey, Commissioned captain on December 20 1861, with rank from October 4, 1861, original.
