DURHAM -- Rev. Ted Stone, 72, of 5114 Pine Trail Dr., Durham, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 16, 2006, in Nashville, Tenn. Ted Stone spent the past 29 years hand-delivering a message of hope to a nation entrapped by drug addiction. He traveled often, speaking from the pulpits of over 3000 churches, and in thousands of other settings including schools, prisons, business conventions and civic meetings. Stone, an ordained Southern Baptist minister, walked across the U.S. three times since 1996, and began a fourth trek in Chicago last month. He carried both the American and Christian flags and availed himself to speaking opportunities along the way. In 1984, Stone authored his biography, "Somebody Special", a graphic account of the rebellious pilgrimage that led him into drug addiction, and the eventual transformation of his life when he totally surrendered his life to the will of his Lord Jesus while in prison. Stone served as a trustee of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Forth Worth, Texas, for nine years and was a long-time member of the Board of Visitors at Southeastern Seminary in Wake Forest. He also served as a member of the NC Mental Health Commission for five years. Governor James Hunt awarded him the Order of the Long Leaf Pine for his contributions to the state and local community in the areas of mental health and drug abuse prevention and cure.

He received a B.A. degree from Wake Forest University, where he lettered as a member of the cross-country team and won the J.B. Currin public speaking award. Stone earned a M.A. degree at NCCU and also studied at Southeastern Seminary and Duke Graduate School.

One of the greatest joys of his ministry were his "sons in ministry", those who accepted the call to Christian service under his mentorship. Philip Barber (a student at Southwestern Seminary) and Sean Reece (a student at Southeastern College) were very active in Ted's ministry, often sharing their inspiring testimonies.

Stone is survived by his wife, Ann, of the home; daughters, Ellen Sichina and husband, Bill, of Shelby, Carole Doll and husband, Drew, of Apex, and Lisa Hilliard, of Apex; grandchildren, Jessica Doll, Chris Doll, Weston Doll, Lily Hilliard, and James Hilliard; mother, Oleta Stone, of Durham; and brothers, Donald and Dwight Stone, of Durham.

Visitation will be Thursday 6 to 8 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home in Durham. A celebration service of the Rev. Stone's life will be held at Grace Baptist Church, 1004 N. Mangum St, Durham on Friday at 11 a.m. Dr. Frank Zedick and the Rev. Scott Cobb will officiate. A graveside service at Woodlawn Cemetery will follow, led by Philip Barber. Two scholarship funds have been established, to continue the Rev. Stone's passion for mentoring those called to ministry. Memorials may be sent to Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Ted Stone Scholarship Fund for Evangelism and Missions, P.O Box 22500, Ft. Worth, TX 76122; or to Southeastern Seminary, Ted Stone Scholarship Fund, Financial Development Office, P.O. Box 1889, Wake Forest, NC 27588.
