A 1940 graduate of South Whitehall High School, Gilbert trained to be a DHIA Milk Tester and worked in Montgomery Co. In Aug. 1944 he was drafted into the United States Naval Reserve, received training in Pensacola, FL and served as aerial gunnery ground instructor at Jacksonville Naval Air Station until his honorable discharge in June 1946 as Aerial Gunnery Instructor 2nd Class.
Following military service, Gilbert attended Pennsylvania State Univ. and graduated in 1953 with a B.S. in Dairy Science. Subsequent education included an M.S. degree from the Univ. of Missouri. He worked as County Extension Agent in Northumberland and Snyder Counties, and as a Loan Officer for Farmers Home Administration until retirement in 1982.
On Sept. 25, 1945, he married his loving wife Mary Ellen Peterson. They celebrated their 70th anniversary in 2015. Gilbert and Mary Ellen resided in Middleburg since 1957, moving to Grayson View in 2005.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by children: son David (Nancy), Racine, WI, daughter Marilyn (Charles) Reed, Middleburg, and grandchildren Jennifer A. Reed, Charles A. (Haydee) Reed, and Richard J. Reed. Also surviving are brothers and sisters, George R. (Barbara) Fenstermacher, Rev. Dr. Elaine (Leonard) Bogert, Irene (Carl) Dotterer, Marguerite Dotterer, May Stocker, Alberta Haas, brother in-law George Rodenbach, sister in-law Rose Fenstermacher, as well as nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother, Marie M. (Hoch Hess) Fenstermacher and father, Clarence Hess, step-father George H. Fenstermacher, sister Elinor Rodenbach, brother Glenn L. Fenstermacher, and brothers in-law Fred Dotterer, George Stocker, and Woodrow Haas.
Gilbert was an avid gardener, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, daily walks, and Penn State football games. He and Mary Ellen enjoyed their cabin in Centre County, summer time at the New Jersey shore, retirement winters in Florida, and travel to all 50 states (especially loved Alaska) and Europe. He was a long time member of the First Baptist Church, Sunbury and more recently Amazing Grace Community Church, Selinsgrove. He was on the Executive Board of Child Evangelism Fellowship of Snyder/Union County, was a member of Penn State Cooperative Extension Retirees, Penn State Alumni Assoc. and Nittany Lion Club, Snyder Co. Historical Society, Pennsylvania State Camp Lessee's Assoc., Keystone Grange #2, and was an AARP Safe Driving Instructor.
Services: A memorial celebration of life will be held at a later date. A family graveside interment will be at Schoenersville Cemetery.
