Lucille Marguerite Leslie Sowder, 96, of Jacksonville, Fl. died at home on July 19, 2004. She was born December 24, 1907 in McKittrick, Missouri, daughter of Dr. James T. and Ella McAfoos Leslie. She had lived in Jacksonville for more than 60 years. She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Dr. Wilson Thomas Sowder; three children: Dr. W. Thomas Sowder, Jr. (Zoraida), Jane Sowder Palmer (Harvey) and James Leslie Sowder (Rita); grandchildren: John Riley Sowder, Paul Leslie Sowder (Amanda), Amy Elizabeth Sowder, Kathleen Lucille Palmer Slama (Robert), Laura Leslie Palmer, David Thomas Palmer, Edward Rugg Sowder and Anne Marie Rugg Sowder Chance (Tony); three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Leone Leslie MacDougall and Frances Leslie Harrell; a brother, Dr. J.T. Leslie, Jr. (Gloria), and a number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters Gladys Leslie and Virginia Lee Leslie Livengood and a brother, Dr. James Paul Leslie.
Mrs. Sowder studied nursing at the Washington University in St. Louis School of Nursing. She received her B.A. from the University of Iowa and her M.A. in Education from the University of Florida. She worked as an R.N. at St. Vincent's and Hope Haven Children's Hospitals in Jacksonville and later taught elementary school in the Duval County Public Schools for a number of years..
Services will be held at St. Peter's-in-the-Mountains Episcopal Church, Callaway, Va, followed by interment.
