William Lee "Bill" Long, 73, former state legislator from Lafayette, died Tuesday, March 4, 2000, in Lafayette Home Hospital. Born March 11, 1927, in Lafayette, he was a 1945 graduate of Jefferson High School, earning 11 letters in football, basketball and baseball. He attended Purdue University, where he also earned letters in football and baseball. He and Lois Ann Sanderson were married Dec. 25, 1955; she survives.

In 1951, Mr. Long earned a pharmacy degree, and operated Bill Long Pharmacy in West Lafayette. He was active in local, state and national pharmacy associations, serving as president of the Indiana Pharmaceutical Association in 1969.

From 1964-1971, he served on the Lafayette City Council, acting as its president in 1970. He was elected to the Indiana House of Representatives from 1973-1982. For six years, he served as chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, and for eight years was a member of the State Budget Committee. He also was appointed chairman of the State Board of Tax Commissioners from 1984-1989.

In 1972, Mr. Long received the Bowl of Hygiea as outstanding pharmacist in Indiana. He also received the Hubert H. Humphrey Award from the American Pharmaceutical Association. In 1980, he was made a Sagamore of the Wabash by Gov. Otis Bowen. Also, he received special commendations for outstanding service to Indiana from governors Robert Orr in 1984 and Evan Bayh in 1989. He was an elder in the Reformed Presbyterian Church, and involved with the Indiana State Council for Prison Fellowship. He was a member of Tecumseh Kiwanis Club, Indiana Public Health Foundation Inc. and Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He also served in the U.S. Coast Guard.

Surviving with his wife are four sons, David Long of Boulder, CO, Michael Long of Indianapolis, Patrick Long of Noblesville, and James Long of Indianapolis; one daughter, Jeralyn Faris of Delphi; two brothers, Art Long of Lafayette and Robert Long of St. Louis, MO; two sisters, Winnie LeBeague of Lafayette and Irene Freestone of West Lafayette; and 19 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
