The census lists his name as Austin S. Barrows, born in Vermont. Austin married Mary Jane Chism. The 1900 Census reveals that Austin and Mary Barrows had 14 children, but just 6 were living in 1900. One child is Edwin P. Barrows who is buried at nearby Burrton Cemetery in Burrton, Kansas.
The Austin and Mary Barrows headstone sets on the southwest corner of the northeast part of Star Cemetery, in other words, near the center of the cemetery. Inscribed on another side of this marker are two children: "John H., son of A. S. and M. J. Barrows, d. Feb. 9, 1897, aged 48 yrs. and Julia, daughter of A. S. and M. J. Barrows, d. Apr. 10, 1873, aged 21 yrs., 6 mo."
The following is from the Burrton Graphic dated Jan. 24, 1896:
Mr. A. S. Barrows, an old and highly respected citizen of Lake township died at his home Monday after an illness of several weeks with a complication of troubles superinduced by old age. Mr. Barrows located in Lake township in 1875 and was a man who by his unassuming disposition made friends with all whom he came in contact. He leaves a wife and family of grown up children and many friends and neighbors to mourn the death of a kind and affectionate husband, an indulgent father, and an agreeable and accomodating neighbor.
He had long since passed the alloted time of three score and ten and when he closed his eyes in the last long sleep it could truly be said that a good man had gone to his heavenly reward. The funeral services which were held at Centennial Church by Rev. Woodward of the Burrton M. E. Church, were largely attended by old friends and neighbors of the family.
