Army Sgt. 1st Class Scott E. Nisely, 48, of Marshalltown, Iowa; assigned to 1st Battalion, 133rd Infantry, Army National Guard, Iowa Falls, Iowa; died Sept. 30 of injuries sustained when his vehicle received small-arms fire during security operations in Asad, Iraq. Also killed was Sgt. Kampha B. Sourivong. Nisely was a 1976 graduate of Syracuse High and a former U.S. Postal Service employee. He was in the Marines for 22 years before joining the Iowa National Guard and was a member of the Iowa Falls-based Company C, 1st Battalion, 133rd Infantry.Sergeant First Class Scott Nisely, 48, United States Army, United States Marines, of 309 West State Street, Marshalltown, was killed in action near Al Asad (located in the state of Al Anbar, Iraq, on Saturday, September 30, 2006. Funeral services and a celebration of Scott's life will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, October 9 at the First Baptist Church in Marshalltown with Pastor Dick Sipe officiating. A time of fellowship and refreshments will follow in the church hall. Friends may call at the church from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Sunday where he will lie in state with military escort. He will be laid to rest at Park Hill Cemetery in Syracuse; Otoe County, Nebraska. Full military honors will be provided by the United States Armed Forces. Memorial funds may be directed in his memory to the Pinnacle Bank in Marshalltown. Born on July 5, 1958, in Nebraska City, Nebraska, he was one of four children born to J.C. and Norma Jean (Gore) Nisely. He was raised in Syracuse, Nebraska and graduated from high school there in 1976. He attended Doane College in Crete, Nebraska on a track and cross-country scholarship and received his Bachelor's of Science Degree in Biology. While at Doane College, he met his future wife, Geri Cecetka. The two were united in marriage on April 17, 1982, in Omaha. Since Scott was enlisted in the United States Marines Reserves while in college and entered the Officers Commission in May 1981, the couple resided in many communities including Kaneohe Bay MCAS, Hawaii, Quantico, VA, Camp Lejuene, NC., and Des Moines where he was last stationed as active duty Marines Major and then reservist. Scott served in Desert Storm and the couple moved to Marshalltown in 1994. He was employed at the IVH one year and then the United States Post Offices in Marshalltown, Ames and Des Moines. SFC Nisely enlisted in the United States Army National Guard and was called to the Sinai Peninsula on a Peace Keeping Mission with the1-133rd Infantry Battalion Charlie Company, Iowa Falls. One year later, he went to Iraq. On Friday, October 6, he would have been there one year and received Sergeant First Class posthumously. Scott was a member of the First Baptist Church, played drums in the music ministry, Shaw Tae Kwan Do in Marshalltown, collected GI Joes, and trained at the Y. He will be fondly remembered for his patriotism, love of family, living and breathing the military, his sense of humor and jokes, positive attitude and compassion. He will be greatly missed by many and his memory treasured by those he protected. Left to honor his memory are his loving wife Geri, daughter Sarah (Nate) Swinton of Ames, son Justin (Andrea) Nisely of Greeley, Colorado, his parents J.C. and Norma Jean Nisely of Syracuse, NE., brothers Jay "Skeet" (Vicki) of Lincoln, NE., Pat (Ellen) Nisely of Lincoln, NE., Bob (Marlene) Nisely of Denver, CO., nephews Jason (Audra) and Brandon (Mandy), his wife's side, cousins and a host of friends and comrades.
In death he has rejoined his grandparents.
