Samuel was born in Randolph County, VA (now Randolph County, WV) in 1787. He married Sarah Folks in 1941. Sarah had a son, William "Amos" Heavner that was born, out of wedlock, in 1827 (Reuben Heavner, father). Samuel assumed guardianship of Amos. Samuel & Sarah had a son, John A. Bonner, in 1843.

Many Genealogists list his name as Sam'l Bonner.

There has been much documented about Samuel's service in the War of 1812 as a PVT in the US Army. Specifically, Sarah's numerous attempts to get pension after Samuel's death. It has been finally proven that Samuel did in fact serve as a PVT in the War of 1812. Samuel was granted a Veteran's Memorial and is listed in the US Veteran's Nationwide Graveside Locator.

This Nationwide Graveside Locator lists his burial in the Bonner Cemetery at Monterville, WV. The Bonner cemetery is closest to Monterville, WV which is located in the Mingo District in Randolph County, WV. The undertaker's address is Monterville. The cemetery is located off Dry Branch Rd (off of Hwy 15) behind a couple of cabins. The cemetery is barely fenced.

John A. Bonner is also buried at the Bonner Cemetery in the Mingo District. His death certificate has the same information with the Bonner Cemetery (farm) located in Mingo and the Undertaker's address is Monterville.

At the time of Samuel's burial, there was not a gravestone. There was a large stone on the ground that read "SB" and "1865". The stones have since been lost. The Federal Govt eventually had markers made for Samuel and Sarah Bonner.
