Ellender Jane Harmon was the daughter of Counicl Harmon (1807-1890) and Nancy Elizabeth Teaster (1809-1853). The 1900 United States Federal Census states that she married Michael Roland in 1858.

Michael and Ellender had the following children: Mary Roland (1859-1953), George Weaver Roland (1859-1928), Susan Roland (1861-1909), Betty Roland (1867-), Andrew
Jackson Rowland (1867-1941), Mary Rowland (1870-1953), William M Roland (1873-1917), Charles Jacob Rowland (1874-1934), Kiesten Roland (1876-) and Hester Roland (1876-).

The 1880 United States Federal Census lists the following children at home on the farm: George, Mary, Betty, Andrew, Mary, William, Charles and Hester. We can assume that Kiesten Roland died before this Census as he is not listed. The farm was located in Spring Creek, Madison County, North Carolina.

Ellender was alone with the children on the farm for several years because when the Civil War broke out Michael enlisted in Company D, North Carolina 58th Infantry Regiment on 07 Jul 1862 according to the U.S., Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles, 1861-1865.

The 1900 United States Federal Census states that Michael and Ellender are living at the Meadow Fork of Spring Creek which was located south of the town of Hot Springs,
North Carolina. The Census states George Weaver has moved back home after his wife's Mariah Sarah died and he and his son David Lafayette are living with his parents. His
daughter Texie Anna married in 1897 and was no longer living with George. The Census also states that William M is living with his parents also.

The 1910 United States Federal Census states that Ellender is living on the farm with Michael who is now a retired farmer.
