Bernard A. Bauer, age 86 of Durand, died Friday July 17, 2015 at his home in Durand, with his family by his side.

Bernard was born on June 10, 1929 at the home farm in the Town of Lima, rural Durand.

He was the son of Ambrose and Mary (Schuh), he grew up in Lima and attended Sacred Heart School in Lima. After school, Bernard worked several jobs in the area before buying the home farm in 1954.

Bernard married Darlene Snyder on April 20, 1950 at St. Mary’s Church in Durand. While farming, Bernard also worked for the Durand Canning Factory, Bauer Built, Guy Halling Construction and Glaus Brothers Construction. Bernard served as the Town of Lima Chairman for 32 years, Town Assessor for 4 years, Pepin County Board of Supervisors from 1986-2000 and Countryside Cooperative Board of Directors in the 1980s and 1990s. Bernard continue farming in the Town of Lima, including raising steers until the age of 84. He was always fixing something in his shop or in his wood working shop.

Bernard enjoyed gardening and visiting with people. Most of all, Bernard loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Bernard is survived by his children; Steve (Georgia) of Durand, Rose (Gary) Sabelko of Mondovi, Mike (Marge) of Wichita, KS, Joe (Jan) of White Bear Lake, MN, Dan (Sandy) of Durand, Bob (Cheryl) of Nelson, Lily (Rick) Hanson of Bloomer and Bev (Roger) Sabelko of Mondovi, 33 grandchildren; 53 great grandchildren, two great great granddaughters; three sisters; Rosella Pickering of Plum City, Lillian (Tom) Drier of Arkansaw and Arlinda (Ron) Plumer of Holcomb, one brother; Norbert of Durand, one sister-in-law; Bonnie Bauer of Durand, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife; Darlene; two infant daughters, one granddaughter; Jennifer Carr, one sister; Loretta Meixner and three brothers; LaVerne, Ray and Lambert Bauer.

Funeral Mass will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, July 21, 2015 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church-Lima in Durand. Rev. Paul Bosco and Deacon Robert Hanson will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-8 PM Monday at the Rhiel Funeral Home in Durand and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.
