GODFREY — David E. Haggard, 82, died at 2:50 a.m. Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at Rosewood Care Center in Alton.
Born January 30, 1934, in Alton, he was the son of William C. and Willie M. (Nance) Haggard. Mr. Haggard served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War and did one tour of duty on The USS Oriskany (CVA-34). He was a former deacon and board member of Abundant Life Community Church and also Edwards Street Assembly of God Church. He was a member of the Alton/Godfrey Kiwanis and an original member of the Board of the YMCA. Mr. Haggard began his career in 1956 with the First National Bank of Alton. He retired in 1999 as Executive Senior Vice President of Mercantile Bank. On August 24, 1953, he married the former Lois Richardson in Oceanside, California. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Lyle D. Haggard of Florissant, Missouri, and Mark A. Haggard (Britta) of Alton; five grandchildren, Brian Haggard (Casey) of St. Louis, Cheryl Haggard-Boyer (Brad Boyer) of Godfrey, Hannon Haggard of St. Louis, Asher Haggard of Alton, and Sage Haggard of Alton, nine great-grandchildren, Gabriel, Carter, Faith, Alexandra, Zachariah, Titus, Jackson, and Madison Haggard and Ariel Boyer. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, William C. Haggard Jr. and Edward Lee Haggard. Gent Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 19, 2016. Gerald Calaway will officiate. Burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey with full military honors by the VFW Post 1308.Published in The Telegraph from Mar. 15 to Mar. 17, 2016.
