A young man named William Salkeld was shot in the back on Thursday while walking on the Leas Promenade at Folkestone. His condition is serious. The assailant, Augustus Menn, was arrested.

Alien Assailant Committed for Murder.
At Folkestone yesterday, Auguste Menn, a German subject, was committed for trial charged with the wilful murder of William Salkeld, a valet.
On the 7th instant Salkeld was walking along the Leas, with a fellow inmate of the Convalescent Home, when, according to evidence, prisoner shot him in the back, death taking place on the following day.
Menn, who had nothing to say, desired to call no witnesses.
The prosecution was undertaken by the Treasury.

At Kent Assizes today Augustus Menn (50), German, was charged with the murder of William Salkeld, at Folkestone, on April 7th, The deceased, who was staying at the Convalescent Home, was walking along the sea front when the prisoner shot him in the back with a revolver, death taking place on the following day. Both men were strangers. Medical evidence was given that Menn was insane, and he was ordered to be detained during His Majesty's pleasure.
