Kenneth Bertman Adams, Sr. Virginia Beach - Kenneth Bertman Adams, Sr. peacefully went home to Jesus on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 after a courageous fight with a long illness. He was 79.

Kenny was born July 11, 1933 in Hayes County, North Carolina to Garvie and Fannie Adams. He was the second of their three children. When he was a boy the family moved to Norfolk, Virginia, and he grew up in the city's Broad Creek Village section. He spent his childhood years seeking the sorts of boyish adventures that might rival the likes of Huck Finn, making for very lively storytelling in his later years. But it was when he met Joan Galvin in a local bowling alley that his life's greatest story began.

Joan became Kenny's wife on May 18, 1953, and she remained the love of his life always. Married 54 years until her death in 2007, they had six children, 18 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Kenny served in the United States Army from 1953 until his honorable discharge in 1955. After attending electronics school he worked as a television repairman for local businesses. In 1967 he opened Adams TV Sales & Service. If you lived in Virginia Beach and you had your television repaired between 1967 and 2004, there's a good chance Kenny fixed it. When he closed up shop in 2004, it was the relationships with customers and fellow business owners that he missed the most. Kenny's true passion in life was his family. A proud husband and father, he was always quick to give his wife credit for the strength and love that characterized the Adams kids. But Joan and Kenny's gifts were a winning combination, and together they made a great team. Their home was a lively, loving and welcoming place. As a busy father of a big brood, camping was a favorite activity. In the fall of the years there were the mountains of Skyline Drive to hike, and in the summers there were the beaches of the Chesapeake Bay. And that's the way the seasons went through the years of growing and changing: days of adventure that would become memories forever, and nights circled around together, faces lit up by campfire, songs and stories filling the air. As the night wore on, he may have even been known to dance to "Rocky Top" a time or two. He saw his kids at their best and their worst, and he supported and loved them through both. Eyes don't come any bluer than Kenny's were, and nothing made them sparkle like his grandchildren. To them he was "Pop" and he cherished every moment he had with each of them.

He was a master of malapropism, a champion of the underdog, and no stranger to silliness or exaggeration, especially if it enhanced his story. No matter how many times he saw them, John Wayne westerns really did get better and better. He attended Grace Bible Church. His solid rock was the Lord Jesus Christ.

A celebration of Kenny's life will be held at Grace Bible Church in Virginia Beach, located at 2956 Ansol Lane. A reception will follow the service at the church.

He is survived by his six children, Barbara and her husband Barry, Sharleen and her husband Jimmy, Kenny, Mary Beth and her husband James, Paul and his wife Denise, Cheryl and her husband, Lee; his grandchildren, Heather, Meredith, Bryan, Joanna, Adam, Lauren, Sarah, Tim, Zachary, Jacob, Hannah, John-Paul, Stephen, Josh, Ryan, Katy, Emma and Madeline; and his great-grand children, Joshua, Caleb, and Grayson.

The family would like to thank the numerous caregivers who lovingly ministered to our father throughout his illness. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters in Norfolk, Virginia.
