Mr. Lacy Mitchell died in John D. Archibold Memorial Hospital due to hemorrhage from a gunshot wound to the abdomen by murders on September 27, 1930. Mr. Mitchell was shot down in cold blood at his home in the Five Forks area of Thomas County by a small posse of 4-7 white men led by Ed Allen and Jack Bradley.

His murder stemmed from a conspiracy to prevent the conviction of the rapists of his cousin by his testimony at trial. Both Allen and Bradley were convicted of murder by an all-white jury in one hour and later sentenced to life in prison.

At his death, Mr. Mitchell owned 125 acres of land, 15 hogs, four cattle, and several mules. He had enough wealth to pay poll tax with made him one of the few blacks in the county who were eligible to vote.

He was the husband of Jessie Mitchell (née Miller). His parents were Warren Mitchell and Georgia Mitchell (née Hollis).

Final arrangements handled by M.W. Majors in Moultrie, Georgia.
