Opera Singer. She was born in Broken Hill in the Australian state of South Australia. Her parents were George Francis Gough and Mary Isobel Daisy Hall. She took her name, Bronhill, from the place of her birth, Broken Hill, in the same way Dame Nellie Melba took hers from Melbourne. June's career started when she came in third in the Sun Aria Vocal competition in 1949. The next year, she won the competition. Broken Hill residents were so proud of June that they raised the necessary funds for her to study overseas. She performed in London with Sadler's Wells Opera and is remembered for playing the lead role in Franz Lehar's "The Merry Widow" in over 200 performances. She also played many other roles with the company. Bronhill took over from Dame Joan Sutherland in 1959 in the role of Lucia di Lammermoor at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. She also played the role of Maria in "The Sound of Music" in Melbourne for sixteen months. In April 1977, she received the honour of Officer of the British Empire for her services to the performing arts both in Australia and Great Britain. Sadly, she was struck with severe deafness in 1994 at the age of 65. After her death in Sydney, her body was flown back to Broken Hill by a special flight of the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Her funeral took place in the June Bronhill Auditorium in the city of her birth. She was cremated and her ashes scattered locally.
